Both visitors and locals prefer minibuses to travel between the towns and villages on the Peninsula. The schedules of these minibuses vary depending on the season. During the summer months, they run very frequently, pretty much all day and night. But during other times, especially in winter when demand decreases drastically, they operate from early morning until night.

Bodrum is a town of the Mugla Province, which is home to other popular destinations like Marmaris, Fethiye, and Datca. The Mugla Municipality operates regular bus services that connect all the towns and villages within the province, typically through the Mugla Bus Terminal. Absence of Sea Transport Alternatives

There are two things that really annoy me about traveling in the Bodrum Peninsula. First, I can’t understand why there aren’t more options for getting around by sea. I mean, who doesn’t love a good boat trip?

Instead of taking a minibus, I would absolutely love to get on a boat and sail to Gumbet or Turgutreis. Sure, it might take a bit longer and cost a bit more, but it would be so much more fun and satisfying. Plus, think about all the business it would bring to the local economy!

Adding sea dolmus services to the Bodrum transportation system would also help ease the traffic. This brings me to my second complaint about public transport.

Small Town + Big Population = Heavy Traffic

According to the latest data from 2022, the official population of the Bodrum Peninsula is around 200,000 people. But that number doesn’t include all the people who live in their summer houses instead of their regular homes in other cities. There’s been lots of people moving to their Bodrum houses during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since they haven’t officially registered themselves as permanent residents of Bodrum, they don’t get counted in the official figures.

If you take all that into account, the actual population is estimated to be around 500,000. And when you add in all the other summer house owners and the visitors who come to town during the summer season, that number reaches up to 1,500,000 people. Can you imagine all those people trying to get around a small peninsula with their cars and minibuses? No wonder traffic on the roads connecting the towns and villages can get jammed sometimes. For example, the journey from Bodrum to Gumusluk usually takes just 30 minutes in the winter, but in the summer, you better be prepared to spend at least an hour on the road!

That’s where sea dolmus services could really help the traffic issue of the Bodrum transportation system. Besides, they would also make the whole trip a lot more enjoyable. Anyway, all we can do right now is to do our best to avoid the traffic, especially during rush hours.
